Oxidation of Thin Nickel-Based Superalloy Specimens: Kinetics Study and Mechanical Integrity

The oxidation behavior of a nickel-based superalloy was investigated from 650 to 1,000 °C for up h in air. Samples with thicknesses ranging 20 500 µm were used document the evolutions microstructure and oxide scale. Oxidation products subsurface evolution metal characterized by XRD EDS analyses. Local breakaway observed after 600 at 800 100 900 due full consumption Cr alloy. Room temperature tensile tests performed on aged pre-oxidized specimens µm, °C. results compared as-received metallurgical state. Both size effects sample thickness reduction thickness/pre-oxidation width ratio examined onto mechanical behavior. Interestingly, formation TCP phases, layer subsequent Cr-depleted region either aging or treatments impairs integrity. Bulk regions are impacted, especially tens-of-micrometer thin samples.
